Edwards Air Force Base

Design /Build - Consolidated Support Facility, CA

MZT served as the Prime Contractor for the new construction of this LEED Silver certified two-story Consolidated Support Facility for the Department of Defense.

In order to achieve stringent DoD timelines, MZT pursued a fast-tracked Design-Build approach. We fast-tracked the foundation and structural construction while finishing the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, interior, and other design elements. This approach enables us to fabricate and deliver long-lead items, such as structural steel members, while remaining design elements are being completed. Because of our fast-tracked approach, we ensured on-time completion of this critical project.
The facility includes auxiliary structures, retaining walls, an elevator system, dry utilities, storm/water/sewer, HVAC, automatic fire sprinkler system, detection and alarm systems, and Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (AT/FP) compliant elements. MZT furnished all interior flooring, desks, tables, chairs, and window coverings. The building site was fully developed with irrigation, landscaping, hardscaping, asphalt paved parking, and concrete paved walkways.

The project incorporated innovative design to achieve LEED Silver sustainability. The building uses an ice bank energy storage system to cool the building during peak electrical demand periods. This ice bank serves as an air-cooled chiller that runs at night, taking advantage of off-peak energy rates and availability, to make and store ice to be used for cooling during peak electrical load demand hours. This environmentally-friendly solution reduces overall energy consumption, and improves life cycle costs by taking advantage of off-peak hours energy rates.

This project received three prestigious awards:

  • Air Force Merit Award for Concept Design
  • Air Force Concept Design Citation Award
  • Air Force Merit Award for Sustainable Design
