The sediment removal contract is a three-year maintenance contract that CJW performed by dredging and transporting sediment from the large Bolsa Chica Backland basin in Huntington Beach. CJW then pumped the sand as a slurry under the PCH Freeway Bridge, down coast, to high ground on the beach and managed the discharge with a dozer and a custom fill strategy to utilize the dredge spoil as beach nourishment . This served to reconstruct the beach head to a specific design grade and an increased width, protecting PCH from extreme erosion. The Backland body of water is very tidal influenced with swift water velocity that constantly moved sediment in and out of the cut area, with a net positive influx of sand. The approach and strategy of the dredge sequence was as important as actual production dredging. If left un-managed, the rich basin would become choked off from the open ocean and flooding would occur in the area by the Santa Ana River.
